Full Description

PRN 30038 This has associated enclosures on the west and north and is likely to be medieval, possibly a grange of Sempringham Priory. The course of the Car Dyke can be traced with it, as a marshy depression. Scheduled as medieval moated site. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} A parallelogram surrounded by a single bank and ditch (external) of a maximum depth of 4 feet. Although traditionally called a Roman camp, it lies over the filled in course of Car Dyke and is almost certainly medieval. {6} Probably site of medieval grange. The ditches interupt the Roman car dyke. The moats drew water from the Billingborough Hode. Lesser enclosure on the west side. A fragment of 16th and 17th century glazed pottery found by C W Phillips. {7}{8} Earthwork on west bank of the car dyke, actually sitting on a line on the east side of earthwork. {9} 'Football field' - rectangular moat under pasture. {10} Medieval pottery and traces of stone wall have been seen at this site, extending north of the moated area. Ridge and furrow is visible on the north and north west in aerial photographs. {11}
