Full Description

Ditched enclosures on either side of large extinct watercourse, visible on APs SE of Postland Station,Crowland, surveyed 12 Jan 1951. Area P - TF29401239 was scattered with pieces of evaporating vessels, supports, and other baked clay debris, sufficient to form a 'Red hill'. At Q - TF29441234 an area of dark soil scattered with domestic debris. Sherds including one sandy jar which could be about 100 AD type, otherwise all C3 - early C4.{1}{2}{5}{6} Sites are under high crop. No evidence of occupation. The majority of Mrs Hallam's finds are in City and County Museum, Lincoln.{1} ALSO AT TF29761233 THERE WAS BRIQUETAGE AND SALTMAKING DEBRIS, AND AT TF29931218 THERE WAS A LOW 'RED HILL' AND SALTMAKING DEBRIS, WITH A C2-EARLY C4 POTTERY SCATTER. {4} DURING THE FENLAND SURVEY THE REMAINS LISTED BELOW WERE IDENTIFIED: TF 29511241 THERE WAS POTTERY, FIRED CLAY AND BONE, TF 29321247 BRIQUETAGE, BONE AND POTTERY, TF 29871236 FIRED CLAY, BONE AND POTTERY, TF 30001218 MOUND, POTTERY, QUERN, BONE AND SLAG, TF 29701236 BRIQUETAGE, POTTERY AND BONE. {6}
