Monument record MLI20208 - SAXON SETTLEMENT

Summary

SAXON SETTLEMENT

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

THIS IS A SAXON SETTLEMENT SITE WITH FINDS INCLUDING CATTLE, SHEEP AND PIG BONE, MUSSELS, FIRED CLAY, BURNT STONE, LAVA QUERN AND EARLY/MIDDLE SAXON POTTERY. THERE ARE NO ROMAN SHERDS FROM THIS SITE. THIS SUGGESTS, WITH OTHER EVIDENCE FROM THE AREA, THAT THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT WHERE ROMAN SITES LAY JUST UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE SILT, THEY PRODUCED A VEGEATIONAL OR TOPOGRAPHICAL ANOMALY WHICH ATTRACTED SETTLERS IN THE EARLY SAXON PERIOD. {1}, HTM 3.5M
