Full Description

POSSIBLE SAXON SETTLEMENT WITH MAINLY EARLY SAXON CHARACTERISTICS; IT WAS NOT MOUNDED AND HAD 56 SHERDS, THOUGH IT WAS SOMEWHAT ATYPICAL IN HAVING ANIMAL BONES IN ABUNDANCE. THERE WAS ALSO A LITTLE SLAG AND SOME RESIDUES FUSED ONTO SHERDS. THE POTTERY INCLUDED DEFINITE EARLY SAXON WARES. THERE WAS NO RECOGNISABLE MIDDLE SAXON, THOUGH SOME OF THE SHERDS COULD BE OF THAT DATE. THERE IS ALSO A PROBABLE MIDDLE SAXON SITE JUST TO THE NORTH EAST. IT HAS A SLIGHT MOUIND, BUT IT WAS UNVISITED BECAUSE OF STANDING CROP BUT ANIMAL BONES AND MUSSEL SHELLS WERE FOUND ON THE EDGE. THERE WERE NO ROMAN FINDS MADE IN THIS AREA WHICH SUGGESTS THE POSSIBILITY THAT WHERE ROMAN SITES LAY JUST UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE SILT, THEY PRODUCED A TOPOGRAPHICAL OR VEGETATIONAL ANAMOLY WHICH ATTRACTED SETTLERS IN THE EARLY SAXON PERIOD. {1}, HTM 3M
