Full Description

An area of probable early to mid-Anglo Saxon settlement related activity was recorded in geophysical survey and trial trenching, comprising a series of pits and gullies, along with a large, 100m wide oval enclosure. Animal bone in the southern section of the enclosure was radiocarbon dated to between 548-684 AD, and was considered to comprise evidence for domestic waste disposal. The excavators considered the Saxon features to broadly respect the earlier Roman features, which may be suggestive of the Roman ditches being at least partially open during the Saxon period. It is considered likely that further Saxon remains are present in the area. {1}{2}{3}
