Summary
A geophysical survey in 2014 identified two discrete areas of archaeology interpreted as being associated with each other. An area of agricultural nature to the east, and an area of settlement (MLI127186) to the west.

Full Description
A probable Roman settlement was identifed in two discrete areas during geophysical survey near Great Gonerby which had not been previously recorded in NMP data {1}{2}. The area to the west (MLI127186) likely represents settlement remains, with the area to the east covered by this record (MLI127187) being of agricultural nature, with excavated finds dating to between the 1st and 2nd century. It was noted during excavation that the density of both archaeological features, and finds, intensified towards the west, while the features to the east were largely sterile suggesting the excavations reached the approximate edge of settlement and agricultural activity centred on the area to the west. {3}{4}
The majority of the pottery recorded was of modest type; grey wares, rusticated jars, however several sherds were diagnostic; a transitional grog and shell tempered jar dating to the mid 1st century, and some transitional sandy ware (Iron Age to Roman). Additionally five sherds of samian ware were also recorded. Animal bones were considered representative of domestic animals; sheep/goat, cattle, and dog. Environmental samples were suggestive of small scale cereal processing.
