Full Description
A dense concentration of Roman features was revealed on land to the south of Orby Road, Burgh le Marsh, during trial trenching of the eastern half of the site in 2013. A number of rectilinear ditches of varying alignment were identified, as was a single large curvilinear ditch. Several 1st century AD drainage ditches followed the slope of the hill with a northeast to southwest alignment. Some of these were truncated by a series of 2nd and 3rd century boundary ditches which were generally aligned northwest to southeast. The remains of a northwest to southeast aligned Roman road, likely dating to the 3rd century, truncated or sealed several of these boundary ditches, and there is evidence that the curvilinear ditch may have been intentionally infilled to construct the road. A row of five northwest-southeast aligned inhumations flanked the road to the west. A significant quantity of artefacts representing domestic waste from this period was recovered from a number of features, with a concentration to the eastern edge of the site, suggesting the existence of nearby settlement. {1}{2}
A series of north-northwest to south-southeast aligned rectilinear enclosures was discovered by a magnetometry survey on the same site in 2019. Due to their regular rectilinear pattern it was assumed that these were of Roman date. To the north of these enclosures was a further grouping of northeast-southwest aligned enclosures. Given the proximity of the northwest-southeast aligned Roman road discovered in the previous programme of trial trenching, these enclosures were suggested to be contemporary with it. It is likely that the two groups of enclosures on different alignments represent two distinct phases of Roman settlement on this land, possibly correlating with the 1st century and 2nd-3rd century phases revealed in the trial trenching in 2013. {3}
