Abstract/Summary

Report on a geophysical survey by magnetometry undertaken prior to a planning application for residential development on land to the south of Orby Road, Burgh le Marsh. As well as north-northeast to south-southwest aligned ridge and furrow, the survey revealed a dense network of linear, rectangular and curvilinear features across the entire site. Many of these features are aligned very slightly off north-south, though there is also evidence of recutting, suggesting a long period of continuous occupation. In the north of the site, many features are aligned northeast-southwest; these features may align with a Roman road identified during trial trenching on the same site in 2013 (see ELI13984). There are also a number of amorphous and short linear features across the site, which may represent pits, hollows, or ponds. It was suggested to be likely that strong magnetic responses from the densely packed features are obscuring other features.
