Abstract/Summary

Archive for a programme of trial trenching comprising three trial trenches excavated in advance of a housing development on land south of the Old School, Burgh le Marsh. A dense concentration of Roman features was revealed. A number of rectilinear ditches of varying alignment were identified, as was a single large curvilinear ditch. Several 1st century AD drainage ditches followed the slope of the hill with a northeast to southwest alignment. Some of these were truncated by a series of 2nd and 3rd century boundary ditches which were generally aligned northwest to southeast. The remains of a northwest to southeast aligned Roman road, likely dating to the 3rd century, truncated or sealed several of these boundary ditches, and there is evidence that the curvilinear ditch may have been intentionally infilled to construct the road. A row of five northwest-southeast aligned inhumations flanked the road to the west. A significant quantity of artefacts representing domestic waste from this period was recovered from a number of features, with a concentration to the eastern edge of the site, suggesting the existence of nearby settlement. A series of medieval features were also identified, including a square pit, possibly used to store water, a series of drainage ditches and boundary ditches, and a beam slot and postholes. Several of these features truncated the Roman road and paved surface.
