Full Description

Brick-built arch bridge carrying Dovecote Lane over the Wainfleet Haven or Steeping River, to the east of Wainfleet St Mary. The bridge was the subject of a condition survey, conducted in March 2017 to investigate its potential load capacity. The span of the arch is approximately 8m between the two banks, with parapet walls on each side measuring approximately 13m long, built of brick and topped with stone coping. The bridge is just under 4m wide, between the parapets at the crown of the arch. The survey found the bridge to be in reasonable condition at that time, with very little sign of structural distress, although some minor cracking and erosion of the brickwork and pointing was noted. {1} White House Bridge was assessed for listing by Historic England in June 2023, after plans for its proposed widening to accommodate larger vehicles were submitted. The bridge is believed to have been constructed in the early 19th century, as part of John Rennie's scheme to drain the East, West and Wildmore Fens. It was decided that the structure did not meet the criteria for listing; whilst the link to Rennie's scheme of draining the Fens is of clear historic engineering interest, the bridge is one of a substantial number of similar structures built as part of the works, and was deemed to not stand out as a significant example of the type. {2}{3}
