Full Description

The remains of a former trackway was recorded in this location in December 2017, during trial trenching conducted to inform proposed road development at the A46 Welton Road Junction. The feature had been recorded as a faint magnetic anomaly during an earlier phase of geophysical survey conducted on the site in June 2017. The trackway was of likely post-medieval date, and was comprised of a small hollow measuring just over 5m wide, with probable wheel ruts in the base, and flanked on both edges by drainage gullies. The ruts and the gullies were overlain by a compact silty clay layer, thought to represent a later resurfacing of the trackway. To the south-west of the trackway was a shallow linear feature, which most likely represented a hedgerow or gully running parallel with the trackway. {1}{2}{3}
