Full Description

The churchyard at the Church of the Holy Cross is depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. It likely dates to at least the 13th century, when the church it serves is thought to have its origins (see MLI86784). {1} Part of a likely mid 19th century churchyard wall was recorded in October 2019, during archaeological monitoring of repair works to the 20th century boundary walling. The removal of part of the modern walling exposed remains of this earlier wall, which was constructed of both coursed and uncoursed, roughly shaped limestone blocks. It was thought likely that this earlier wall was contemporary with the rebuilding of the church in 1848, although evidence of later repair works conducted in brick to the wall were also noted. Several small fragments of redeposited and disarticulated human bone were also recovered from the graveyard soil, with the fragments being re-buried at the conclusion of the investigation. {2}{3}
