Full Description

Parish church of 13th century origin, but largely rebuilt in 1848. Built of coursed limestone rubble and ashlar with ashlar dressings. Slate roof, with coped gables and kneelers. Fragments of the original 13th century fabric have been identified, including the piscina shaft. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4} The 13th century church may have been built on the site of an earlier Saxon church of some importance. The placename 'Kirkby' is derived from Old Danish meaning 'the village with a church', and is a name normally given to villages in which the Danes found a church on their arrival. Kirkby Green and Scopwick were returned together for the purposes of the Domesday Survey. The survey mentions a church and a priest for this area, and this possible earlier church at Kirkby Green may have been the church indicated. A fragment from a late Saxon grave cover was formerly located in the garden of the Old Vicarage at Kirkby Green (see PRN 67111). The grave cover may support the idea of an earlier church in this area, although its exact provenance is not known, and it may have been brought to this area from elsewhere. {5}{6}{7}{8}
