Full Description
A ring ditch was identified in the north-west corner of a site, located to the east of Grantham Road, Waddington. It probably dates to the later prehistoric period, and was first identified during a detailed magnetometry survey that took place in November 2014, and was partially excavated during trial trenching in February 2015. It is most likely a barrow or hengiform monument, with a possible entrance to the south-west, and likely had an internal bank or mound. {1}{2}{3}
The feature was excavated in October 2017, prior to the proposed construction of new residential development in this area. The ring ditch is 18m in diameter, 1.2m-1.9m wide, and 0.21m-0.48m deep. No finds or other dating material were found during the excavations. The feature was thought to be the remains of a Bronze Age or Iron Age barrow, rather than the remains of a dwelling, given the lack of evidence for an entrance way. No evidence for a burial or cremation was found, but this may well have been ploughed out. {4}{5}
