Abstract/Summary
Report on the detailed gradiometry survey that was conducted to inform proposed development on land to the east of Grantham Road, Waddington. A probable ring ditch was identified in the north-west of the site, along with an area of settlement the south-east of the site. This likely settlement activity comprised a large rectangular enclosure with a smaller enclosure contained within it and numerous adjacent pits or postholes. Several other features were identified with less certainty, and these include what was thought to be a former field system across the entire site, a former trackway, and cut features that are likely related to modern agricultural activity.
Subsequent trial trenching in this area confirmed the ring ditch, while the area of settlement remains uninvestigated (see ELI13131). No archaeological evidence was found to support the field system, with only geological material found. This lack of evidence, in addition to further geophysical survey at a nearby site (see ELI13127), indicates that what was thought to be a field system is actually natural fracturing or jointing of the underlying limestone geology.
