Full Description

Parts of the complex of agricultural buildings at Curlew Court were the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in June 2015. The exact date of construction for the complex is not known, but its form of adjoining farm structures and barns, arranged around a central courtyard, is typical of the 'High Farming' movement of the mid 19th century. The buildings were constructed of red brick, largely laid in English bond, and feature pitched pantile roofs. These roofs were raised at some point relatively soon after the construction of the complex, as evidenced by the change to Stretcher bond for the upper courses of brickwork for most of the structures. The survey recorded only the southern range of the complex, which comprised a former feed store and fodder room, cattle shelter and stable block (from east to west respectively). 20th century alterations included the addition of a chicken shed and greenhouse to the southern end, and the replacement of roof timbers and modernisation of the former cattle shelter. Although not included in the survey, the western range was described as comprising former cart sheds and pig pens, with the northern range comprising a former threshing barn. This northern part appears to have been relatively recently converted to a business or residential use. {1}{2}
