Full Description

The war memorial at Deeping St Nicholas stands in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas and honours the fallen of the First World War and the Second World War. It is a twelve foot (three and a half metre) Portland stone memorial influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. It consists of a square, tapering shaft and double plinth mounted on a three-stepped base and surmounted with a stylised cross. On the obverse face is a three quarter length relief carving of St George with a reversed crusader's sword. The memorial was unveiled in 1921. {1} The war memorial is set in the churchyard of the church of St Nicholas to the south-west of the path as it approaches the north door. Constructed of Portland stone, it consists of a rectangular shaft rising from a plinth on a three stepped pedestal standing on a square base. The shaft is surmounted by a wheel cross. The names of those who died in the First and Second World Wars are inscribed on the faces of the top tier of the plinth; a single name of the casualty of the Korean War (1950-1953) is inscribed on the lower tier.
