Description

First World War Memorial, 1921, with later additions. Reasons for Designation Deeping St Nicholas War Memorial, unveiled in 1921, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20; * Design interest: its position, well-proportioned design and imposing height make it a striking presence on the approach to the church; * Group value: with the church of St Nicholas, which is listed at Grade II. History An unveiling and dedication service for Deeping St Nicholas War Memorial took place in the churchyard of St Nicholas Church on 31 March 1921. The service was conducted by the vicar, the Revd William Benson and the memorial was unveiled by Mr William Porter, a local farmer and landowner. The number of names recorded of those soldiers who died in the First World War is 31, with 4 added for the Second World War, and one for the Korean War of 1950-1953. Details The war memorial is set in the churchyard of the church of St Nicholas (Grade II), to the south-west of the path as it approaches the north door. Constructed of Portland stone, it consists of a rectangular sectioned tapering shaft rising from a two tier plinth on a three stepped pedestal standing on a square base. The shaft is surmounted by a wheel cross, and on the side of the shaft facing the church is a three quarter length relief carving of St George with a crusaders sword. At the base of the shaft on this side the following text is inscribed: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THESE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE. The names of those who died in the First and Second World Wars are inscribed on the faces of the top tier of the plinth; the single name of the casualty of the Korean War is inscribed on the lower tier.
