Full Description

The churchyard at the Church of St John the Baptist is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. The current church of St John the Baptist dates from around 1450, but there has been a church on this site since at least the 12th century, and it is likely that the churchyard dates back to this period as well (see PRN 30602). {1} A number of post-medieval features and deposits were identified in the churchyard in September 2004, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for new drainage at the church. Located within the southern trench and adjacent to the South Chapel was a series of sandstone steps built on brick risers. No conclusive date for the steps could be determined, though they were thought to pre-date the early 18th century, due to their lack of inclusion on a view of the church drawn at that time. Located 4m south-west of these steps was the remains of a brick built tomb. Backfilled around the tomb was a deposit of grey clayey silt which contained fragments of human bone and limestone rubble, as well as a small collection of 19th century pottery, brick, glass and a nail. Above the tomb, and built up against the stone steps was an extensive graveyard deposit containing 17th to 19th century pottery. Residual medieval pottery sherds were also retrieved from this deposit. {2}{3}
