Full Description

Cast iron footbridge over Maud Foster Drain. Single span, twin ribs, cast iron railings, brick abuttments. Cast at Butterley Ironworks in 1811. {1} It is 67ft 9" long, 8ft wide at each end and narrows to 4ft 6" in the centre. The bridge is arched, rising by a maximum of 2ft 6" at mid span. The bridge is still in its original condition except for the footway resurfacing. The widening of the Maud Foster Drain in about 1810 resulted in three footbridges, designed by Rennie, being constructed. One was replaced by a road bridge, the other two remain. {2}{3}{4}{5} Hospital Lane Bridge is an elegant single-span bridge of iron, cast by the Butterley Company in 1811 and probably designed by John Rennie (cf Cowbridge, 1.5 miles north in Fishtoft Parish). For the former description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {6} In 1807 the engineer John Rennie was commissioned to build the Maud Foster Sluice at the point where the drain discharges into the Haven, part of a further fenland reclamation scheme. The two cast-iron footbridges, Cowbridge and Hospital Bridge, were constructed in 1811 by the nationally important Butterley Company, Ripley, Derbyshire. The ramped, narrow, single span bridge has plain vertical railings and in the middle of both sides of the supporting girder is stamped 'CAST AT BUTTERLEY 1811'. The balustrade continues for a short distance along either bank. At each end of the span, and at the termination of the balustrades, there are pairs of ashlared gritstone piers. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {7}
