Description

A geophysical survey was conducted on land to the west of South Witham Quarry to inform a proposed quarry extension. This followed an earlier, more limited, phase of geophysical survey (ELI8392) and subsequent trial trenching (ELI14559). The survey revealed that a series of Middle to Late Iron Age ditches encountered by the trial trenching at the western edge of site formed part of a wider enclosure system. A continuation of the trackway identified by both the earlier geophysical survey and trial trenching was also recorded. Anomalies representing probable Medieval ridge and furrow were also noted in the western half of the site. {1}
