Full Description
During trial trenching on land to the west of South Witham Quarry in September 2016, four ditches were encountered from which Middle to Late Iron Age pottery and cattle and sheep/goat bone indicative of domestic waste was recovered. {1}{2}
Subsequent geophysical survey of the area revealed these ditches formed part of a series of connected ditched enclosures. Within these enclosures, several more ditch-like anomalies suggested the presence of sub-enclosures. A dense group of pits or areas of burnt material was also recorded to the south of the enclosure complex. {3}
