Description

A magnetometry survey was conducted on land at Temple Hill to inform the proposed construction of six wind turbines and associated infrastructure. Six discrete areas were surveyed. In the two northern survey areas, a number of anomalies interpreted as ditches and pits were observed, including a possible ring ditch. Traces of a possible palaeochannel were also detected. In the southwestern survey area, a dense array of ditches and pits was discovered, representing around 3ha. of settlement remains. The focus of this settlement appears to be in the mid-north of the survey area, where a possible penannular ditch feature was encountered. At the eastern edge of this survey area and just clipping into the central survey area, a probable teardrop-shaped enclosure with internal pits and ditches and probable openings at the north and south ends was encountered. The central eastern survey area was dominated by a large curvilinear feature. This comprised a band of ditches and pits aligned southwest to northeast and curving towards the northwest with a number of penannular or partial rectilinear enclosures to either side. A number of possible ditches and pits extended from this group towards the west. In the far eastern survey area, a number of possible pits and linears were encountered, likely associated with a known former farmstead to the northeast, along with a large pit or quarry feature in the southwest corner. Discrete anomalies suggesting possible ridge and furrow remains were also encountered in the north and west of the surveyed areas, some of which appeared to truncate the dense area of settlement remains. {1}
