Description

A programme of archaeological survey was conducted to inform the future conservation management of the Baptist Chapel at Monksthorpe, Great Steeping. The chapel and its associated structures and graveyard are thought to date to 1701, to a period shortly after the passing of the Toleration Act of 1689, but when non-conformist congregations were still regularly persecuted. The chapel represents a rare surviving example of a purpose-built early Baptist structure, and features an external total submersion baptistry that is one of only two known in the country. The site is now in the care of the National Trust. {1}
