Full Description

The burial ground at the Monksthorpe Baptist Chapel is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. It likely dates to 1701, when the church it serves was built (see PRN 42235). {1} The burial ground was included in a programme of archaeological recording, conducted in July 2016, to inform the future conservation management of the chapel site. An inventory and study of the extant gravestones was conducted as part of the survey, and recorded 187 individual grave markers. The condition of the gravestones varies significantly, with those of the 18th century being largely illegible and suffering from lamination and weather damage, although the 20th and 21st century grave markers are in much better condition. Several family groupings could also be discerned within the burial ground, which is now in the care of the National Trust. {2}
