Full Description

A font, said to be one of only two exterior total immersion fonts in the country. {1} Total submersion font which is approximately 23m east of the Baptist Chapel at Monksthorpe. It is a Grade II* listed font, built of red brick in about 1701, with some late 19th and 20th century alterations. There are six 18th century brick steps which descend gently from the west into a rectangular tank approximately 6m long and 3m wide. The tank is lined with 18th, 19th and 20th century tiles and has a brick coped surround. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} The exterior font was included in a programme of archaeological recording, conducted in July 2016, to inform the future conservation management of Monksthorpe Baptist Chapel. The structure is built of red hand-made bricks and tiles, and takes the form of a sub-rectangular pond or tank, sunk into the ground surface. Some renovation works to the font were conducted in 1993, and the site is now in the care of the National Trust. {3}
