Title South Witham Quarry Western Extension: Archaeological Evaluation
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2016

Abstract/Summary

Archive for a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising 24 trial trenches excavated on land to the west of South Witham Quarry to inform a proposed quarry extension. This followed a programme of geophysical survey (ELI8392), which indicated the presence of a probable prehistoric settlement complex. The trial trenching encountered ditches, pits and post holes containing Iron Age pottery and animal bone corresponding with the geophysical survey results, and also confirmed the presence of a northeast-southwest aligned trackway with flanking ditches at the eastern edge of site. The remains of Medieval furrows were noted in two trenches.
