Description

The report on a detailed gradiometer survey that was undertaken on land at Towngate East. The survey was undertaken prior to a proposed residential development. The survey revealed a series of linear anomalies on the southern half of the site. The features were identified as enclosure, bounded by a double ditched trackway to the north and a series of ditched boundaries to the south, identified as a possible trackway from cropmarks. The features coincide with several features located to the west of teh survey area of late Iron Age and roaman date, thus identifying the features as part of a settlement complex of the same date. A series of linear anomalies were also identified as probable ridge and furrow across the settlement site, though not as strong as the swettlement anomalies. Other anomalies identified were evidence of modern disturbances and iron spike reading associaed with modern discarded pieces.
