Full Description
A series of cropmarks were identified to the south of Towngate East. These included a double ditched linear feature which has been interpreted as a Roman road. The remains of other features, including enclosures, ring ditches, and further possible trackways are located to the south of the road which may be associated.
During a watching brief, five possible pits or ditches were recorded, possibly related to the cropmarks to the north of the site. {1}{2}
During a watching brief two Roman ditches were identified and sherds of 2nd-3rd century pottery were recovered. {3}{4}
Geophysical survey of land at Godsey's Lane, Market Deeping (TF14051075) revealed an extensive complex of ditched enclosures and possible pit features mostly located in the northern half of the site, which in all probability represent part of a more extensive Late Iron Age and Romano-British landscape (the remains appear to be a continuation of the cropmark complex further to the north and east of the site). {5}
Subsequent archaeological evaluation was undertaken at the Godsey's Lane site. In total fourteen trial trenches were excavated. These revealed late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement remains extending across the northern and eastern areas. The pattern of late Iron Age and Romano-British remains suggests a continuation of occupation. Although a single sherd of pottery may be post-Roman, no pottery could be clearly dated beyond the mid to late third century, suggesting that occupation ceased at this stage. {6}{7}
27 trial trenches were excavated on land at Towngate East in November 2010 to January 2011. The work revealed further evidence of the Iron Age to Roman settlement including enclosures, boundaries and trackways, pottery, animal remains and briquetage, suggesting it was also a salt making site. The Iron Age evidence was mainly located in the southern section of the site, whilst it appears that in the Roman period the settlement was extended further north. Human remains within a Roman ditch and roman ceramic building material was also found which suggests that there was a structure/s in the vicinity. {8}{9}
