Description

The report on a programme of trial trenching was undertaken at Willingham by Stow Farm, Marton Road, Willingham by Stow. The work consisted of 31 trenching, which were excavated prior to determination of a proposed Battery Energy Storage System. 24 of the trenches revealed no archaeology. 7 trenches, all located on the eastern side of the site, contained archaeological features which consisted of 17 ditches, 3 pits and 3 postholes, the majority of these features were primarily concentrated in the northwest corner. The ditches were identified primarliy as drainage or boundary ditches, aligned in several directions though primarily north-south or east west. The ditches contained several sherds of Late Iron Age to Romano-British pottery, dating from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD, as well as several animal bone fragments. Other finds included a possible iron nail of uncertain date was uncovered, as well as a 4th century coin.
