Full Description

A series of features, comprising of ditches, pits and postholes were uncovered during trial trenching excavations on Willingham by Stow farm (ELI14489). The features were found on the east field of the excavation area, with the main area of features found in the northeast corner. 5 ditches were uncovered in trench 19, mostly running east to west with one running north west to south east. One ditch was recut. A pit and pit or ditch terminus were uncovered in the centre of the trench on the east and west sides, and both extended beyond the excavated area. Three post holes were found that cut the fills of the east side pit, with one post hole being cut by the pit on the west side. All features contained animal bones and sherds of 1st-2nd century pottery. An iron nail was uncovered from the NW-SE aligned ditch. Two ditched were found in trench 21, aligned north east to south west. A pit was found located between the two ditches. Sherds of 1st-2nd pottery and animal bones pieces were found in the pit and one of the ditches. 3 ditches and a furrow were uncovered in trench 22, aligned north to south. The ditches contained sherds of Romano-British pottery. A pit was also uncovered in the trench. No finds were found, but stratiography concluded that the pit post-dated the ditch and pre-dated the furrow. Trench 25 revealed two ditches aligned east to west. A coin dated to the 4th century was found in one ditch. The features found were identified as drainage or boundary ditches, and correlates with Roman activity previously found to the east (MLI84314). {1}{2}
