Abstract/Summary
Report on nine trial trenches excavated to inform the proposed residential development of land to the north of Main Street, Mareham le Fen. Deposits associated with Medieval tile production were encountered in the southwest corner of the site, immediately to the north of a known 14th century tile kiln identified during an excavation in the 1960s (see ELI31). These deposits included the intact surface of tiles lain on edge likely forming the floor of a kiln, and part of a probable rectangular pit used for 'puddling' the clay prior to firing. A large cropmark close by to the east, not excavated, may represent a clay extraction pit. Further to the east, and behind the current residential plots on Main Street, a number of Medieval domestic waste pits were identified. In the northwest corner of the site, away from the street frontage, the remains of ridge and furrow were also encountered.
