Full Description
A medieval roof-tile kiln was excavated in the field north of the A155 in 1966, by M. Hodgson and H. Healey. The kiln was small and rectangular, measuring 10.5ft (3.2m) wide by 9.5ft (2.9m) long, with two flues at the north end. Only the outside walls were standing and inside were three rows of roughly shaped sandstone pieces, six in each row, which had presumably supported the bars on which the tiles were stacked. The products were mainly flat red roof tiles with one central lug and yellow roof tiles with one lug and a square nail hole beside it. Red ridge tiles were also produced. Archaeomagnetic dating by the Oxford Archaeological Research Laboratory gave a date of 1300 to 1350. {1}{2}
The remains of a second tile kiln was partly exposed during trial trenching in 2015, immediately to the north. the revealed area was 1.7m long and 1.2m wide. Only the floor of the kiln, consisting of rows of closely packed tiles lain on edge, and the possible base of the western kiln wall remained. Adjacent to this kiln was a shallow sub-rectangular pit interpreted as a 'puddling' pit for preparing the clay tiles prior to firing. A large cropmark a short distance to the northeast may represent a clay extraction pit. {3}{4}
