Full Description
Features likely associated with Medieval settlement were encountered during trial trenching on land to the north of Main Street, Mareham le Fen in 2015. A series of boundary ditches closely aligned with the housing plots on Main Street, immediately to the south, may represent Medieval toft and croft boundaries. Pits containing small quantities of Medieval pottery and animal bone are likely to be domestic waste pits associated with those plots. The westernmost of these features were sealed by a subsoil within which was found a 14th century tile kiln (see MLI40749), suggesting two distinct phases of Medieval activity on that part of the site. {1}{2}
