Abstract/Summary

Report on seven trial trenches excavated to inform proposed development on land to the east of Boston Road, Sibsey. Trench placement targeted concentrations of anomalies identified as part of a prior geophysical survey on the same site. Six ditches and six rubbish disposal pits were encountered, as well as a single undated post hole. An east-west aligned ditch that aligned with extant property boundaries was dated to the post-Medieval period by a piece of clay pipe stem recovered from its fills. The other ditches were either positively dated to or interpreted as mid- or late-Medieval in date. Four of the waste pits encountered were also positively dated to the 15th-16th centuries. These features likely represent the remains of Medieval and post-Medieval roadside settlement. Traces of east-west aligned ridge and furrow were also identifed across the southern end of the site.
