Abstract/Summary

List of woodlands within England considered to have existed continuously since at least 1600. Ancient woodland may often contain standing earthworks and buried remains related to their historic management and utilisation, such as wood banks, former saw pits, coppice stools, charcoal hearths, etc.

Description

The Inventory began to be compiled in the early 1980s by the former Nature Conservancy Council, as a county by county paper list. Later revisions by Natural England have added in areas smaller than the original 2 hectare size limit, with the current revised list dating to April 2026 (available via the National Data Library).
