Full Description
The remains of a compact limestone rubble wall foundation of unknown date was identified in January 2013, during trial trenching at 1a Castle Gate, Castle Bytham. A linear spread of rubble was found adjacent to the foundations, and was thought to represent the remains of a further collapsed wall. Although no dating evidence was recovered, it was thought that the features may be medieval, given their proximity to the remains of the adjacent medieval castle, and the depth at which they were found. {1}{2}
Further undated features were revealed in June 2014, during a subsequent archaeological watching brief at 1a Castle Gate, Castle Bytham. Two pits were recorded in the north of the monitored area, along with an adjacent layer of spread material. Several large fragments of iron tap slag were recovered from one of the pits, with more being recovered from the spread layer, along with a fragment of vitrified furnace lining. Although none of the fragments could be dated more closely than the Roman or medieval periods, they do suggest that iron working was occurring on or very near to the site. {3}{4}
