Full Description

An isolated group of magnetic anomalies were recorded in December 2010, during a magnetometry survey conducted on land east of Golf Road, Mablethorpe. It was thought that the anomalies could by the result of early industrial activity, representing an area subject to intense temperature. The anomalies lie in close proximity to the courses of several probable palaeochannels, suggesting that the represent the remains of a possible saltern. {1} An archaeological evaluation, undertaken in June 2013, revealed this feature to be a dump of modern rubble and burnt material. The evaluation consisted of an auger survey and the excavation of a trial trench, both sited over and around the magnetic anomalies previously recorded. A sequence of alluvial and silty clays was revealed, along with the dump of modern material, but no archaeological activity was identified. {2}{3}
