Full Description

A systematic fieldwalking survey was conducted in 2011, to inform the proposed construction of a new water treatment works, to the south-west of Newton on Trent. A large quantity of unstratified flint artefacts were found, mostly concentrated in the area of land next to Newton Cliff, to the south-west of Newton on Trent. The assemblage was mostly comprised of knapping waste, including a large number of flakes and about ten cores cores, and indicated that flint was being brought to the site and worked there. There were also a number of retouched pieces, suggesting that tools were being used and discarded on the site as well. The identifiable artefacts were dominated by blades and blade-like flakes, being mostly of late Mesolithic or early Neolithic date, and including serrated blades, two truncated blades and a notched blade. Later activity was also represented, with many of the flakes and also a few of the cores being somewhat irregularly worked and probably belonging to the later third or early second millennium BC. The finds included a classic thumbnail scraper of early Bronze Age date and a discoidal core that is likely to be late Neolithic or early Bronze Age in date. Subsequent trial trenching in 2011 also recovered an assemblage of unstratified flint objects from the topsoil and subsoil across the development site, including blades, flakes, scrapers, cores and debitage material. It remains unclear whether the assemblages recovered from the fieldwalking and trial trenching represent continuous occupation of this area throughout the late prehistoric period, or rather more sporadic activity. {1}{2}
