Full Description
The former weavers rooms on James Street were assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as the buildings have been significantly altered, to the point that almost all the characteristics that may once have identified them as weavers rooms are no longer discernible.
The former weavers rooms are comprised of nos.1-4 Mews Cottages, 56, and 58a-c, James Street, and form one of the few remains of the former Louth Spinning Mill Company. The buildings are thought to date shortly before the construction of James Street was completed, in c.1792. The buildings are comprised of two-storey cottages, brick built with a pantile roof, and wooden casement windows to front and rear. The former weaving rooms were originally open plan but are now (at the eastern end) divided into four mews cottages with elliptical arched porches and a larger elliptical arched passageway leading to the rear of the building. Some window openings appear to respect the original openings but most have been replaced and enlarged, and the doors and arches inserted. Rear porches have been added to three of the four cottages. Towards the western end of the row, where there is a change in the alignment on the street front, the front elevation has been rendered. The eastern end of the building is known to have been converted to cottages in the early 1970's, and it is likely (though unconfirmed) that the western end was converted at the same time, as the porches and arches are given the same treatment. Changes in the height of the roof line suggests the row was originally four separate buildings, or four phases in the development of the same building. {1}{2}
