Full Description

30-32 George Street was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as, although the level of decorative detailing sets it apart from other mass-produced houses of the period, it lacks the architectural flair and innovation worthy of designation. 30-32 George Street is a pair of mid 19th century semi-detached houses, built to the designs of James Fowler. The building is of finely jointed rich red brick laid in Flemish bond with white brick dressings and slate roof covering. The houses face west onto George Street and have rectangular plans with rear wings. The houses have a decorative character with a Venetian Gothic influence. The wide, gabled outer bays have two storeys and an attic, and project slightly from the narrow, two-storey inner bays. The roofs are steeply pitched and embellished with bargeboards in the form of a trefoil-headed arcade, surmounted by finials at the gable apex and feet. The inner bays have a dentilled eaves cornice. The building has corner pilasters of slightly raised brickwork which has alternate bands carved with a roll moulding. The gabled bays are lit by a ground-floor canted bay window with corner pilasters, a bracketed cornice, and a cast-iron rail supported by three decorative finials on the roof. A linear range of outbuildings is laid out north-south along the rear boundary. The outbuildings are of brick with a single pitch gabled roof clad in slate. {1}{2}
