Full Description

Sessions House, Eastgate, was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as extensive and unsympathetic alterations to the rear and east elevations have reduced its overall architectural quality. The Sessions House was probably built in the 1880's as part of a civic complex comprising a court and police station. It is of red brick with slate coverings to the hipped roofs, which are surmounted by iron finials. It served as a magistrates' court until 2008, having been significantly extended to the rear in 2004, when a new single-storey entrance addition was also built at the east elevation and the interior was reconfigured removing court room no. 2, installing new cells and creating a separate rear prisoner entrance. The building remained empty until 2011 when it was taken over by Louth Town Council for use as an office and meeting place. The former court room no. 1 is used as a chamber for council meetings; Brown's Panorama and a number of paintings and plaques hang in the chamber. {1}{2}
