Full Description

209 Eastgate is one of a pair of mid 19th century houses, on the outskirts of Louth, assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as the classical integrity of the original design has been compromised by later 19th century additions. Although retained, the interior detailing is quite plain, and the overall building is of a kind that survives in large numebrs throughout the country. The building is of brick, and shares with 207 a south, front range with a shallow-pitched slate roof. To either end of this range are north wings, the inner slopes of their roofs extending down to create valleys either side of a central, pitched roof between the two houses. There are tall chimney stacks to either end of the front range, with stacks to each roof of the side wings to the rear, as well as stacks to the ridge of the central roof. 209 Eastgate is of two storeys, the south elevation of three bays, the central bay and outer panels breaking forward. Deep bracketed eaves and a cill band clasp the corner of the building to the east. The elevation is symmetrical, and has a central front door with an arched classical doorcase, including a broken pediment with dentil cornice. Beneath the arched head of the doorcase is a decorative fanlight; the door has six fielded panels. To either side of the door are flat-roofed canted bay windows with single-paned horned sashes to each side. The windows have cambered arches; there are pilasters between them and a dentilled cornice above. The three windows to the first floor are six-over-six unhorned sashes, under rusticated wedge lintels with keystones. The east elevation has three similar windows to the ground floor and one to the first floor, above the central ground-floor window. {1}{2}
