Full Description

203 and 205 Eastgate are a pair of mid 19th century houses, built of brick with interlocking concrete roof tiles. The buildings were assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as later additions have compromised the integrity of the original design, itself an attempt to imitate an earlier 19th century model. The houses share a south, front range with shallow pitched roof, to either end of which to the north are wings with hipped gables. Between the two wings each house has a different arrangement: 203 has two smaller sections, the hipped gables flush with the north gable of the main rear wing; 205 has a single wider section, its hipped gable set back from the main building line of the north elevation. There are chimney stacks to either end of the front range, with a stack to each roof to the rear. The houses form a pair, clearly built as a single unit, and are of two storeys with semi-basements; 205 also has a cellar. Although of a single build with a shared roof, the external detail to the main south elevation and the fenestration of the north elevation are different to each other, while the brickwork to the north indicates some alteration and possible additions. In the south elevation, both houses are symmetrical, each with three bays, the central bay and outer panels slightly advanced, and each with a central four panelled front door beneath a classical portico, the upper panels glazed, with rectangular overlight above. The portico columns have ionic capitals, the frieze decorated with triglyphs. Above each porch is a balcony with decorative wrought iron baluster to the same design, behind which are French doors, the glazing with margin lights. {1}{2}
