Full Description

193 Eastgate is one of a pair of mid 19th century houses, on the outskirts of Louth. It was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as, although the original features of its main south elevation are retained, detail is limited, and alterations to the north elevation have been made. Significant loss of the interior detailing on the first and second floors has also occurred. The building is of brick with a slate roof, and has a slight L-shaped plan. The house is of three storeys with basements; the basement opening onto the slightly lower garden to the rear, where the north elevation appears as four storeys. An external covered passage at semi-basement level connects the front of the house to the back, service area. The shallow pitched roof has deep bracketed eaves and chimney stacks set on the ridge to either end, the east stack apparently shared with 195 Eastgate. The main south elevation is of three bays, the front door occupying the west bay, with two windows to each storey in the bays to the east, diminishing in size upwards. Stone steps rise to the front door with a portico over. This has fluted columns with capitals and frieze of the Doric order. A map of 1839 shows a scattering of properties east of the junction with Northgate, with 193 depicted towards the west end of this group. It forms a pair of houses with 195 Eastgate, with both clearly built as a single unit; subsequent alterations include a two storey extension inserted between the rear north wings of the two houses, added before the survey for the 1906 Ordnance Survey map. {1}{2}
