Full Description

129-129a Eastgate was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was originally used as a house after its construction in the early 19th century, but was modified for commercial use in the 20th century. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as its conversion entailed significant alterations to the plan form and loss of early detail to the interior. The building is of red brick with slate roofs, built to an L-shaped plan form, with a main range facing south onto the street. The shallow pitched roof has two ridge chimney stacks. The main range is of three bays with three storeys, the central front door raised above street level accessed by steps and flanked by canted bay windows with lead roofs with bracketed eaves. The interior of the main range has been adapted for use by a dental practice, with significant alterations to the original interior detailing. The building is depicted on both a map of 1839 and on sketches made by William Brown in 1844, for his Panorama. These illustrations show a scattering of properties east of the junction with Northgate, with 129 Eastgate appearing as the last property on the north side of Eastgate before the House of Correction. Its footprint is depicted as similar to that shown on modern maps. {1}{2}
