Full Description

A building survey of the structures at 40/40a St Paul's Street was conducted in August 2013, prior to proposed demolition and redevelopment. The recorded buildings comprised a mixed group of residential and commercial properties that had been repeatedly altered and repaired over time. The earliest parts of the recorded buildings appeared to be some of the stone walls recorded during the survey which were probably post medieval but may possibly include elements of medieval date. One of the buildings built of brick and stone, but largely of brick, comprised typical Victorian cottages, probably dating to the mid to later 19th century. Three apparently original doorways to the cottages suggest they may have originally been three separate dwellings, typical of small houses in the town. The remainder of the recorded buildings and building elements on the site were of largely 20th century date, with numerous additions, alterations and repairs being evident, probably spanning much of the century. {1}{2}
