Full Description
The site of the former country house at Sudbrooke Holme is recorded on the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps. The building has since been demolished. {1}{2}
The majority of Sudbrooke and Holme was monastic land, which was acquired by the Grantham family after the Dissolution. The land was sold to Christopher Beresford in 1629, who is said to have moved his family into a sizeable property near the village, named as 'Sudbrooke Holme', although the exact location of this house is unknown. The estate of Sudbrooke Holme was acquired by the Ellisons in 1759 and turned by them, and latterly the Sibthorpes, into an emparked grand residence (see PRN 53073).
The exact date of construction of the Ellison's new house is uncertain, although it is believed to have been completed by about 1780. Most of this house was demolished in c.1930, although portions of the foundations survive to varying degrees. The piers of the south-eastern gateway still survive, constructed of red brick with dressed stone cladding. Photographs of the house, conducted prior to its demolition, show that the house was largely constructed of these same materials. Some of the iron fencing and ornamental decorations immediately around the house also survive. {3}
Henry Thorold, who probably knew the house, reports that it was taken down in 1951. {4}
