Full Description
Parkland and gardens are documented on the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps (dating from around 1880 and 1905 respectively). These botanical features are associated with Blyborough Hall. {1}{2}
The stream has been dammed to form a pair of large ornamental lakes (that to the west is now drained): the Tithe award map appears to show a group of small ponds of unknown date within the plantation east of the north to south road and a rectangular ornamental pond on the side stream and in the middle of the tree avenue. The lakes, together with the lime avenue and emparking eastwards, and brick walled garden can probably be attributed to the Luards in the later 18th century; and the restoration of the church with fashionable classical details may be part of the landscaping. The neatly square layout of the garden with the Hall on its northeast side (its west facade prescribing the orientation), and defined on the northwest by two large terraces against the falling ground, with the southwest quadrant occupied by a former orchard and the southeast by the wall garden, may be an earlier arrangement. In scale and conception it is similar to late 16th century or 17th century layouts elsewhere, and may be a relic of the Ayscough or Southcote residence. {3}
