Full Description
Fourteen evaluation trenches were excavated by Pre-Construct Archaeological Services in 2009 prior to construction of a marina at Eastfield Rise Farm, Cherry Willingham. In the south east corner of the site in Trench One East, seven vertically set timber posts, fragments of late Bronze Age to early Iron Age pottery and animal bone were recorded. In Trench Seven, five vertically set timber posts and three horizontal posts were found along with part of a bronze sword [PRN 56424].
The waterlogged wooden posts were subject to detailed examination; where identifiable, the posts were a mixture of oak and ash, with typical fen species such as alder, willow and poplar thought to be the likely species of the less easily identified remains. All of the posts were roundwood pieces, with evidence of trimming; most were thought to be from human coppicing, though several pieces showed clear evidence of felling by beavers, being later collected by humans and re-used for posts. {1}{2}
